For some of us, lockdown has been a chance to spend more time with our dogs — but how is this impacting them?
Research is telling us that, while some dogs have been happy to have their human family at home more, others have been stressed by reduced exercise, inability to find a quiet place to rest or lack of contact with other dogs.
Some researchers are reporting that most owners have reported seeing at least one new behaviour problem during lockdown.
The Lost dogs home in Melbourne has recorded the following:
About 50 per cent of pets presenting as overweight
Increase of arthritis secondary to weight gain and increased walks
Gastrointestinal upsets from diet changes or extra human food treats
Separation anxiety in dogs
So what do we do to help our beloved doggies?
- if possible try to introduce periods of separation during the day to try to reduce the dogs anxiety of being alone once you return to work.
- seek help if any signs of anxiety are shown by your dog
- keep up regular exercise to minimise weight gain in your dog and to keep them occupied to reduce bad behaviour due to boredom.
- make sure you limit the amount of human food and treats that you dog receives to keep them healthy.
If you are concerned about anything to do with you pet please seek the help of your local vet as soon as possible.
